LSU heads to Florida with coaching, execution criticism abound | Tiger Pride Podcast

LSU heads to Florida this weekend in dire need of a victory against the Gators to right a ship many fans and media see as quickly sinking.

The Tigers have now lost two of their past three in the wake of a 24-21 stumble at home to the Sun Belt conference’s Troy that ended a slew of notable streaks the Bayou Bengals had carried for much of the 2000s thus far.

And fingers are pointing in every direction — from the team’s youth, to its leaders, to coordinators Dave Aranda and Matt Canada, head coach Ed Orgeron and athletic director Joe Alleva.

Mark Clements and Jerit Roser delve into LSU’s biggest issues thus far, what to make of the coaching and administrative situations, the quarterback battle between Danny Etling and Myles Brennan, and in exactly how serious of dangerous the program is of a bigger-picture slide.

Revisiting LSU’s season outlook after its Dome domination of BYU | Tiger Pride Podcast

LSU’s 27-0 rout of BYU in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome this past weekend was enough to force Jerit Roser and Mark Clements to revisit at least a couple of their preseason predictions.

The Tigers’ defense looked stellar, and Danny Etling and the new-look Matt Canada offense provided plenty of foundation for optimism — even despite some early issues.

Check out the podcast below as Jerit and Mark break down the opener, including Players of the Week on both sides of the ball, and look forward to what this first look may mean for the season ahead.

Four LSU true freshmen start season opener, several other play early vs. BYU

LSU has a history of true freshmen starting football games. But not quite like this.

A possible-record four started — and made their presence felt — in an eventual 27-0 defeat of BYU (1-1) on Saturday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome to headline a deep group of first-time contributors called upon in Game No. 1.

“We knew they were gonna play,” coach Ed Orgeron said. “We prepared them. These were some of the best freshmen I’ve seen around. I thought they were gonna play well. Actually, I probably thought they were gonna make more mistakes than they did.

“I think that’s a credit to our older guys. They helped coach ’em up, and they stayed calm on the sidelines and calm before the game. And credit our coaches that coach their positions. They managed their positions, and they did very well.”

LSU doesn’t allow BYU to cross 50-yard line in dominant, ironic Superdome return

With seemingly eyes on offensive coordinator Matt Canada’s debut, LSU’s dominant — and ironic — defense stole the show in the program’s return to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The Tigers (1-0) held BYU (1-1) to just 92 yards of total offense in Saturday’s 27-0 shutout victory to begin the 2017 schedule, their first season-opening shutout since 2007.

In fact, the Cougars failed to cross the 50-yard line in a performance many fans and media throughout the day likened to LSU’s own offensive futility in the 2011 national championship contest in the same venue.

“I think the second quarter, we’re over there looking at the stats and saying, ‘You know, we’ve got a real shot of doing this,'” senior defensive lineman Christian LaCouture said. “We expect to be that. But you never know at the game — you could have a great performance, but it’s 200 yards total or 300 yards total, but you played well.

“But when I saw in the fourth-quarter, it’s (about) 97 yards, I’m like, ‘No, we’re staying in. We’ve gotta keep going.'”
