LSU rout of Texas A&M continues late-season surge that sets table for strong 2018

by Jerit 0 Comments

The heavy criticism that swirled around first-year coach Ed Orgeron and his LSU football team less than two months ago seem so much more distant.

The Tigers (9-3, 6-2) rolled past Texas A&M (7-5, 4-4) on Saturday, 45-21, to claim a sixth win in their past seven outings to not only salvage a bumpy September, but put together an impressive season overall.

And set the foundation nicely for the near-future in the process.

“After the Troy game (Sept. 30), I couldn’t think but about one second at a time, to be honest with you,” Orgeron said. “I could not look that far. I knew that we could get the team together, try to take it one day at a time, try to get the team right, fix the things that we could fix.

“After looking back at all the things that we went through, it’s a remarkable feat by a football team and our coaching staff.”

LSU’s offensive struggles vs. Florida far surpass final play, toss dive

by Jerit 0 Comments

Saturday’s final play was less the culprit than a nutshell.

LSU snapped the ball from Florida’s 1-yard line, tossed to running back Derrius Guice and came up short of tying and likely beating the Gators as time expired.

The Tigers’ offense had left much more to be desired for four quarters of a miscue-riddled afternoon for both sides, though, than simply an understandably frustrating conclusion to the 16-10 defeat.

“We can’t put the result of the game on one play,” senior fullback John David Moore said. “That wouldn’t be fair to anybody on this team. Really, yeah, he was supposed to go the other way, but at the end of the day, it comes down to everybody on this team.”

LSU, Danny Etling face more challenging, indicative litmus test at Auburn | Podcast

LSU could still continue its rebound and enter November’s showdown with Alabama on a long winning streak and looking much different that the squad that lost its season opener.

But the Tigers could just as likely stumble again. And again. And again. To a four- or five-loss season.

Saturday at Auburn will be the best indicator yet as to which direction coach Les Miles and company will go.

The performance of new quarterback Danny Etling, who earned his first start this past Saturday against Mississippi State, has been encouraging.

But, if history is any indication, the odds his and his team’s success continues on the road this weekend aren’t exactly through the roof.
