LSU, Danny Etling face more challenging, indicative litmus test at Auburn | Podcast

LSU could still continue its rebound and enter November’s showdown with Alabama on a long winning streak and looking much different that the squad that lost its season opener.

But the Tigers could just as likely stumble again. And again. And again. To a four- or five-loss season.

Saturday at Auburn will be the best indicator yet as to which direction coach Les Miles and company will go.

The performance of new quarterback Danny Etling, who earned his first start this past Saturday against Mississippi State, has been encouraging.

But, if history is any indication, the odds his and his team’s success continues on the road this weekend aren’t exactly through the roof.

LSU’s confidence in Danny Etling obvious vs. Mississippi State, but bigger test looming at Auburn

Teammates entered and exited the postgame press conference room Saturday night calling Danny Etling’s name as media members swarmed LSU’s new quarterback.

The playful nature wasn’t uncommon for the Tigers — particularly on the heels of a victory — but the confidence and comfort in the junior on the night of his first start since transferring from Purdue had already become evident much earlier and often.

Both from his fellow players and his coaches.

“Extended plays, ad-libbed, did the things he was supposed to do. Pretty accurate. I think he missed on maybe two throws. Made plays with his feet. I liked him,” coach Les Miles said, later adding: “I do very much like Danny, and I think he’s done a great job, and I would anticipate that he would be in that position come that trip to Auburn here next week.”

LSU turns to Danny Etling: Will QB change bring stabilizing force or more trouble? | Podcast

Danny Etling provided LSU an undeniable spark in the second quarter of an eventual 34-13 rout of Jacksonville State.

But the junior transfer turned the ball over twice and went 0-for-6 during a second half that re-raised questions for a fan base that had just emphatically applauded what appeared to be answers.

So what lies ahead for the Les Miles and the Tigers — particularly at the quarterback position?

Jerit Roser and Mark Clements discuss their expectations in the podcast below.

The apparent Danny Etling era of LSU football began Saturday in grand fashion before running into some of its own second-half shortcomings.

Les Miles, Cam Cameron and company pulled starting quarterback Brandon Harris in favor of the transfer from Purdue in the opening seconds of an eventual 34-13 rout of visiting Jacksonville State.

The Tigers trailed the Gamecocks, 3-0, at the time, but promptly rattled off 34 of the game’s next 41 points.

Etling passed on five of his first six downs — going 3-for-5 in the process — and completed a 46-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end DeSean Smith for a 6-3 lead and both players’ first career touchdowns.

Denham Springs football returns to field, bright lights after historic flooding

“Normal” isn’t a word that’s being tossed around Denham Springs lately.

Ever since historic flooding hit the southern portion of Louisiana in mid-August, the entire region has been working to get back to some semblance of normalcy.

Although life has been anything but.

A small piece of that will change Friday though, as one of the area’s strongest uniting factors returns to the city: high school football.

It may not seem like much of a big deal, but anyone from the city or surrounding area knows what the Yellow Jackets mean to the community.

“When you talk about Friday night lights and high school football across the country, the communities that have the one high school that’s based in their city, there’s a lot of pride like that everywhere,” said head coach Dru Nettles. “Denham Springs is no exception. It’s a special place.”

When the clock strikes 7 p.m. and the ball is teed up for the opening kickoff, it’s not only going to signify the start of a new football season for Denham Springs.

No, it’s so much more than that.
